Orcas Island land trust protecting their community fabric through housing

The OPAL Community Land Trust on Orcas Island was one of the first of its kind in the West, and has remained a leader in creating perpetually affordable housing for rent and ownership in their small, rural community. OPAL’s work serves to “bridge the gap between the island’s high property values and the modest incomes of many who live and work here – people who are vital to our quality of life and our community’s well-being.” Their vision is that “working families, earning island incomes, have the opportunity to put down roots and thrive,” which will add to the stability, economic vitality and diversity of their small island.

OPAL’s work, which is supported by private foundations and public grants, builds their homes – both single-family houses and multi-family apartments – with a respect to the environment and character of the local community. They are currently working to develop a new project of 45 rental residences, as well as incubate a community loan fund.  Learn more about OPAL at https://www.opalclt.org/ or take a visit next time you are in the San Juan Islands!
