PUBLIC COMMENT HELPFUL TIPS

Public Comment is not a Dialogue:
Comments must be directed out council (not the audience). Staff will give a brief response following all public comments

Keep it Succinct
You want your point to be clear and understood. There’s a 3 minute limit but no need to use the whole time.

Focus on Solutions:
Don’t just criticize, propose concrete solutions and offer constructive suggestions.

Be Respectful:
There is a lot of complexity and emotions wrapped up in many of these issues. Keep language constructive and demonstrate that you are listening. Remember everyone in the room is part of the community.

Personal Stories are Powerful:
We are all moved by emotion. Grounding issues like affordable housing in real life stories can have a resonating impact.

Bring a Friend:
We all benefit from a little support and camaraderie. Though talking must be held to a minimum, texting is a good alternative.

Celebrate
Delivering a public comment is a big deal! Feel proud that you had the courage to participate.
